Karen - I started out taking photos of snowflakes on the deck, but then I noticed they were sticking to my pant legs, which was a much more contrasty background to photograph them against.
Tricia - Yes, very real. I used two "macro" filters on my wide-angle lens to capture this shot.
I can see I am going to have to learn more about photography and filters, and the like. You've peaked my interest with these snowflakes. I have a friend who can "mentor" me a little. ~karen
I'm Heather, and I consider myself in the "serious hobbyist" category of photography. My favorite subjects are those found in nature, but I also love taking pictures of animals (especially our dogs) and food. I invite constructive criticism on this blog, so if you have any suggestions about composition, technique, lighting, etc, please let me know in the comments section. I look forward to your feedback.

In case you're wondering, I shoot with: * Nikon D50 DSLR body (discontinued), with 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm zoom lens * +1, +2 and +4 macro filters, polarizing filter, neutral density filter * Vivitar tripod

That is so perfect, it looks as though it is part of the design on the fabric background!! Just beautiful! ~karen
Oh my goodness, this is so pretty! Is it a real snowflake? You're good, you're very good!

Karen - The filters I used are super small and cheap, but they really do the job. Is little sis your mentor, I wonder?
That's amazing and beautiful. Jack and I both simultaneously said "woah" when we saw it.
ms - Hi Sugar! Hi Jack! Good to hear from you - thanks for the comment. I bet you guys have more snow than we do!
